I started taking pictures of street signs as soon as I arrived in Tokyo in 2014. I found the vivid illustrations charming and evocative—they reflect so much I came to learn about Japanese culture. Three years later, I had documented over 2,000 signs, mostly located in the Tokyo area. This series has received press from Kotaku, Gizmodo, and Spiegel Online, amongst others, and a selection of photos was featured in a book in 2020.
